Parbold Ramblers - walk

Sunday September 3rd

Tarn Hows 8½ miles difficulty B. – May have some rough going or hilly parts

Meet RED LION, Newburgh at 8.30am. (There is an event on in Parbold.) The journey is about 1 hour 40 mins. We aim to start the walk at 10.30am and should arrive back at the Car park before 4pm. We did not recce a pub but there are plenty in Coniston, and an ice cream van in the Car park. There are toilets in the car park at the beginning and end of the walk and plenty of natural foliage on the walk itself. This is a National Trust car park and so it is free if you have NT Membership. Make sure you have your sticker on the car. If you are not a member it is £7.50 (Ouch. Almost worth joining!) It might be better to try to organise lifts with members of the National Trust. We are parking in the Tarn Hows Car Park.

The Walk

This is a rather strenuous 8 ½ mile walk through some stunning countryside with great views across the southern Lakes. The first part of the walk involves a descent over rocky ground which can be slippy so take care, alongside lovely waterfalls.

Then there is a long rocky climb (unsuitable for buggies and wheel chairs) but the view at the top is worth it. We can take our time with plenty of rests! This is up Holme Fell. There is then a pleasant walk down past an enormous disused quarry. There is another more gentle climb up Black fell again with wonderful views. The walk takes us back along the side of Tarn Hows to the car park.

Although this is a demanding walk the views are worth it and Lynn managed it without too much complaining. The walk is mainly on good stone paths, so good boots and sticks are recommended. You are responsible for your own safety.

Directions

Tarn Hows is on a one way very narrow road. There are various ways to get there but this was the way we went.

M6 North to Junction 36. Left at top of slip road. A590 signposted Barrow. 3 miles then 1st exit at roundabout A590 signed Barrow and Milnthorpe. Continue along A590 through Newby Bridge, continue about 5 miles, then turn right on A5092 at Greenod towards Broughton in Furness. Follow this road for about 3 miles and then take the A5084 signposted Torver/Coniston. At Torver turn right on A593 to Coniston. Through Coniston, turn right on B5285. About 3 miles along this road is the little one way road to Tarn Hows. It is signposted Tarn Hows. If you get to Hawkshead you have gone too far.

(We did try going via Hawkshead from Newby Bridge but the roads are very narrow this way). It is 88 miles.
