Parbold Ramblers - walk

Stocks Reservoir Slaidburn

Sunday October 1st 2017

7.5 miles, difficulty B. May have some rough going or hilly parts

The Walk

The walk is 7.5 miles mainly easy walking with a few gentle inclines. If the ground is wet there is a section that has a thin layer of mud over a metalled track it is not deep but gaiters would be a good idea.

The Start.

The start is a car park in Gisburn forest. There is a fee of £3 for all day parking. The roads after Clitheroe are narrow & twisting so I have allowed longer than normal for this stretch. Hence the earlier start time, this will give time for a toilet stop in Slaidburn if required.

Meet at Parbold shops at 08.30 am with a view to start the walk at 10.30. (this gives time to enjoy the drive after Waddington & take a toilet stop at the bridge if required)

Directions.

Leave the M6 North at Preston Junction 31 and follow the A59 towards Clitheroe. At the roundabout at the end of the Whalley bypass the A59 becomes dual carriageway. Continue on the A59 for about 1.5 miles & turn left off the A59 SP Clitheroe shortly after a mini roundabout. Continue towards the town downhill. At the bottom turn right SP Through Traffic follow the road over a mini roundabout to the next roundabout (BP petrol station on your right) go straight across SP Waddington. In Waddington carry on through the village passing the Higher Buck Inn on your right .Continue uphill SP Newton past the remains of the Moorcock Inn till you reach Newton.( the road from Waddinton to Slaidburn is a delight) In Newton pass the Parkers Inn on your left & pick up the sign for Slaidburn taking you to the right. In Slaidburn go right at the Hark to Bounty Inn down to the river bridge. (Toilets are in the car park area). Continue over the bridge follow the road around the hairpin bend & 3 miles from the bridge ignoring any turn offs, you reach a cross roads SP Stephen Park & Gisburn Forest to the left. Turn left here the road is narrow with passing places & runs parallel to the reservoir. Go past the church on a right hand bend & in about 2 miles from the cross roads the road turns sharp right & the car park is in front of you.

Toilets.

There are public toilets in Slaidburn but non on the walk itself.

Safety.

Most of the paths & tracks are in good condition but there are one or two places where it is muddy so care must be taken at these locations. Make sure you have warm & waterproof clothing with you it is October. Suitable footwear is essential & a walking stick could be useful in places.
