Upper Dolphinholme

The Walk If a good day this will be a lovely walk in a beautiful setting in the Wyre Valley with good views of the Bowland Fells. There was a mill built complete with adjacent cottages for the workers, The deep cutting riven cut out by the Wyre as it flows off the Bowland Fells was ideal for powering one of the new breed of mills that spurred the Industrial Revolution A huge waterwheel turned the machinery that produced cotton and worsted cloth before the advent of steam power made it redundant, It was one of the tallest water wheels in Britain ,68 feet in diameter and 12 feet broad the wheel was second only to the fine specimen that still operates, if only for tourists at Laxey in the Isle of Man. After the mill finally closed its doors in 1862 the wheel was blown up and no remains can be found.
Directions. Take M6 North leave at junction 33 at roundabout take 1st exit Left Then almost immediately take first left into Hampson Lane travel approx 1ml to Tjunct Turn right and travel on this Road over two cross roads at the 3rd turn left into Greaves Lane travel approx 1ml and you will reach your destination on the right Dolphinholme Village Hall car park LA2 9BU.
Terrain Rolling grass pastures farm tracks and we have a few country lanes to walk due to having to miss out crossing fields due to missing foot bridges and unsafe stiles care to be taken also at the start we have to go down a fairly steep paved pathway could be slippy but there are handrails to assist . Also there is a sunken grassy corridor track this could be wet and a little tricky also a couple of fords to cross. All manageable with care and assistance if needed A couple of little climbs but I think Harry will be okay.
Toilets Sorry none at the start or on the walk.
