Parbold Ramblers Walk

Malham. Sunday 20th October 2019

Meet Parbold Shops 8.30am. The journey is 1 hour 15 mins. 60 miles. Start time 10am.

This is a lovely, but strenuous walk amid spectacular limestone scenery. About 7 – 8 miles. About 5 hours.

Directions

Everyone has their favourite route to Malham. This is ours.

M6 north to J31. The A59 Cltheroe/Whalley. Follow A59 for about 20 miles to Gisburn. Turn left at mini roundabout A682 signed Kendal/Settle. Follow this for about 5 miles the right signed Hellifield. After half a mile at Hellifield turn right towards Skipton then very soon fork left signed Malham. At Otterburn go over the bridge continuing to Airburn where you turn left to Kirby Malham. Drive down the hill into Malham. Car park on left National Park Centre Car Park. Parking for all day is £4.50. Suggest cash for the machine , which does take cards but is complicated!! Toilets are free at the car Park.

Note. There is some roadside parking but we felt the car park best.

The Walk.

We have chosen this walk for one of the challenging walks because of the terrain. Some of the walk is over very limestone strewn areas and therefore needs to be approached with care. The descent from Malham Tarn is particularly tricky especially in wet weather when the stones are slippy. Good boots are essential and a stick useful.

The walk takes in Janet’s Foss, a lovely waterfall where Janet the queen of the fairies apparently lives in a cave behind. Then we will walk to Gordale Scar, a spectacular example of limestone erosion. We will walk across the moors to Malham Tarn where we plan to have lunch. There is often an ice cream van here. Walking down to Malham Cove and then across the limestone pavement here, where the view is lovely, but great care is needed to negotiate the gaps in the limestone. There are 400 steps down to the river below which we follow back to Malham.

Pub

The Buck Inn in Malham. We walk past this in the way back to the car park.

Toilets

Free toilets at car park. Otherwise none but plenty of drystone walls and large lumps of limestone to hide behind. Everyone is responsible for their own safety.
