Parbold Ramblers walk Ruff Wood

Sunday 6th February 2022.

Meet at Parbold shops at 9.15 or at the starting point at 9.45. The starting point is the lay-by at the entrance to Lathom Hall Estate, opposite Cranes Lane Lathom. We hope to start the walk at 10 am.

Postcode L40 5UJ.

Directions from Parbold

Drive along the A5209 towards Burscough. When you get to Taylors Farm turn left onto B5240, Plough Lane. The layby is on the left about a mile or so along. If you get to what used to be Pilkington’s (now NSG) you have gone too far.

The Walk

This is a flat walk of about 5miles across the Lancashire plain. There are no styles, and some mud so boots and poles are recommended. We will walk down Cranes Lane past Ormskirk Golf Club, and then along to Castle Lane. Although these are quiet lanes, you will need to be aware of some traffic. We will cross the main road A577, then continue along paths to reach a road. A short walk takes us to Ruff Wood where we will stop for coffee. We walk across fields along a well-defined path, where it can be a bit muddy in places, turning right at Needless Inn Farm to follow quite a muddy path to re-join Cranes Lane. We expect to be back at the lay-by about 1pm.

NB there are no toilets, but there is a little natural foliage along the route.

***** We have not included a stop for lunch. However, The plough is a mile up the road from the lay-by and does food although it might be wise to book if you wish to eat there.
