Parbold and District Ramblers
Sunday 12th April 2026 UPHOLLAND LOOP (WN8 0JH)
Meet at Parbold shops at 9.30 am or at the walk start point at Harts Lane car park at 10.00am.
The walk is about 5 1/2 miles. Difficulty C ( Easy to medium) No stiles.
Directions
From the shops head up Higher Lane over Ashurst Beacon and down Mill Lane towards Upholland.
Go pass the car parks for the Beacon Park Country Park and Harts Lane is marked on the right as the road runs down to Upholland.
The Walk
The walk is an interesting one covering the medieval village of Upholland and includes parts of this scenic village which is known for its wide ranging views of the North West from the Lancashire coastline to the Welsh Hills the Peak District and the Pennines.
We will walk pass St Thomas the Martyrs Church which was built around the remains of a Benedictine chapel that was founded by the de Holland family in 1307 and subsequently converted into a priory in 1319.
We exit the church yard and head for a coffee stop or a lunch stop at Abbey Lakes for those not having a meal at The Rigbye Arms.
The walk will continue through the ancient woodland of Dean Wood and then pass the former seminary of St Joseph’s College that once supplied priests to the north west of England.
The building is Grade 2 listed and is currently being converted into apartments and new build.
Terrain
The footpaths are generally good but short stretches along the footpath through Dean Wood as well as up to Mill Lane can be muddy. The bonus is that there are no stiles
