Parbold ramblers Walk

Arnside Knott and Silverdale

Sunday 1 July 2018

Meet at Parbold shops at 8.30, with walk starting at 10.00 The walk of 7 miles starts at Eaves Wood Car Park

A walk around Arnside Knott and the shore of Silverdale with its limestone craggy fringe and wooded paths includes the fine viewpoint from the 159m Arnside Knott The Knott is renowned for its Interesting Flora which includes six species of orchid, overt 00 flowering plants and a multitude of interesting trees and shrubs. In 1862 two trees were knotted by a Kendal solicitor, Harry Arnold and his bride Mary Susan Gough and they became a notable landmark. Only one of the trees remains as a stump and can be seen near one of the viewpoints. A new pair of larches has been knotted in the hope that the tradition will continue,

The walk will continue past Arnside Tower built in the second half of the 15th century as a tower house for protection from the Scots, suffering a serious fire in 1602, was repaired and remained in use until the end of the 17th century. Onwards from here we will pass through Holgate’s caravan park and continue on to the Silverdale shore looking again at the expanse of Morecambe Bay from a lower level. Time and distance will not allow much more, but to return to the cars and a farewell drink before we leave this area of OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY.
