A Walk Around

The Ringing Singing Tree

Sunday August 12th 2018

The Walk

Meet at Parbold shops at 9.00. The walk is about 7.5 miles long over open countryside east of Burnley. There are extensive views over open moors & fields. The paths are mainly good underfoot but at the end of the walk there is about half a mile of road walking so care must be taken here. The Ringing Tree is a sculpture that mimics a small tree that has been shaped by wind over many years. It is made out of tubes of varying length laid horizontally that sing as the wind blows over the end of the tubes.

The Start.

There is a small car park adjacent to the tree plus other grass verges close by. There is not a lot of parking space so we need as few cars as possible.

Directions.

Take the M6 North to J29 & pick up the M65 East(Burnley/Blackburn). Leave theM65 atJ9 & follow the road over the motorway to a R/A. Go left on the A679 0.7 miles to traffic lights then turn right onto A646 Hallifax. In 1.3 miles at traffic lights turn right (get into outside lane) onto A682 Rawtensall. In 0.2 miles turn left onto a minor road SP Panoptican. Follow this lane for 1.5 miles passing over a cattle grid on the way after about a mile the road goes uphill & you can the tree on the sky line to your left. Car park is at the top on your left.

Toilets.

There are no toilets on the walk but there is tree cover in places if required.

Safety.

Most of the paths & tracks are in good condition but care must be taken at 2 road crossings & the last stretch along the road. Make sure you have warm & waterproof clothing with you. Suitable footwear is essential & a walking stick could be useful in places.

Meet at Parbold shops at 9.00am with a view to start the walk at 10.15am. The journey is about 32 miles & takes about 50 minutes, I have left plenty of time just in case the motorway is busy.
