Parbold Ramblers

Condor Great and the Old Railway Path.

Sunday 7th July 2019

Meet Parbold shops 09-00 or Condor Green 10am

Directions

Take the M6 North to J33 for Galgate. Follow the slip road to the roundabout and turn right onto the A6 for Galgate & Lancaster. Continue on the A6 past the marina on your left pass under the railway bridge and at the next set of lights turn left by the pub. Follow the road, passing under the railway arches, and then you will see a road leading off to your left signed for Condor Green. Take this road and keep on it for about two miles. The road is quite narrow so take care. When you reach the "T" junction near a small bridge, turn right and you will see The Stork pub ahead. Go to the pub, turn left and follow the lane past the front of the pub heading towards the river. The car park is a little further on the right.

Parking.

If the machine working it is £1 for the day.

The Walk

This is a 6mile walk grade B starting from the car-park at the old fishing port of Condor Green near Glasson Dock on the Lime Estuary. We walk back past the pub along a country lane then we cross hedged fields to the Lancaster Canal to gain the canal towpath for approx. 2 miles. We leave the canal and have to walk a short way on the busyA588 Note NO footpath. We have to cross the road with CARE to climb a stile to access quite a steep field to ascend. If a good day, we should get good views. From the field we head downhill passing a row of pretty cottages, then a track down to the banks of the Lune .Here we join the course of the old railway track opened in 1883 closing down in 1964. This leads us back to the start.

Toilets

Good ones id the carpark

Terrain

As you see from the walk details we have a mixture of terrain, we walk on firm level dirt tracks, tarmac country lanes, and canal towpaths. There is one uphill field to climb but not too strenuous. The main problem was three stiles which could be a problem to us who have short legs. The other concern is SAFETY. The short stretch of road A588, we have to walk along NO FOOTPATH so great care to be taken. We also have to cross it again and care to be taken.

Note

My planned backmarker as abandoned me in the choice of travelling to foreign parts, so hopefully Peter & Lesley will fill the breach. I hope you all enjoy the day
