Parbold and Ditrict Ramblers

SUNDAY OCTOBER 3 2021

Local walk RABBIT ROCKS

Difficulty rating. C – Almost all flat and easy going. Accessible to all

There is a definite urban renewal theme to this walk. Go back less than 100 years and this walk would have taken in some of the dirtiest, smelliest places in Wigan. In the 1930’s George Orwell described the area in his diary as a “frightful landscape of slagheaps and belching chimneys”. With lots of investment and the helping hand of Mother Nature, the area directly to the south/south east of Wigan town centre has undergone a complete change, and this 7.3mile walk through Wigan’s “Greenheart” highlights that remarkable transformation.

Meeting place.

Head towards Wigan town centre, at the Saddle junction keep in the left lane and as you go under the bridge and over Seven Stars bridge take the next left on to Wilcock Street. Take the next right down the side of Corkills to Herbert Street (one way) , the car park is immediately on the right this is a Wigan Council FREE car park. Postcode WN3 4AZ. Meet here at 9.45am ready for a 10am start. Alternatively meet at Parbold shops at 9.30am. Please see Jimmy if you need a lift. (01257 464163)

The Walk

This is an easy walk along canal towpaths through woodland and nature reserves all the paths are shale or tarmac. To experience one of the highlights of the walk – the views from Rabbit Rocks. This was once the site of Europe’s largest iron and steel works, and the rocks comprise of unwanted blocks of slag, some of which are huge and cylindrical, The views of the town centre and beyond are impressive. There is a main to cross and a short road walk, take care single file please. You are responsible for your own safety. There are no stiles and hopefully no mud.

Food

We will stop for lunch, so bring a something to eat and drink.

Toilets

None on the walk . Plenty of natural Foliage.
