Parbold and District Ramblers
WALK - SEPTEMBER 4TH 2022.
Hurst Green and the three rivers. 6 ½ miles.
The walk
This is a fairly easy walk through fields and good footpaths. Some of them are carpeted. There is a flight of 125 steps at one point. There is a short bit of road walking. Single file and care needs to be taken. We walked fairly slowly on a dry warm day and it took us 4 hours including stops for lunch and for the dog to play in the rivers.
Meet at Parbold shops at 9am . There are toilets (free!!!) at the village green in Hurst Green so after you have parked at the Aighton Bailey and Chaigley Memorial Hall car park , walk down to the toilets and we aim to leave there at 10 am. The car park has an honesty box which suggests a £2 contribution.
Directions
M6 north. Leave at junction 31 and follow A59 Clitheroe. At roundabout take first exit A59 Clitheroe. Follow A59 until you reach a cross roads and traffic lights. Turn left signed Ribchester. After 2 miles, go over the bridge and after ¼ mile turn right onto Gallows Lane. After 2 miles(ish) at the T junction turn right B6243. After 1 ½ miles you reach Hurst Green. Go left at the village green triangle. The Memorial Hall car park is on the right just past the Bailey Arms. 30 mile journey, about 45mins.
You are responsible for your own safety.
The three Rivers are the Ribble, the Calder and the Hodder. JRR Tolkein is supposed to have been inspired by the landscape and one of his sons studied at Stoneyhurst Prep school. We will walk past Stoneyhurst and also a house where Tolkein is supposed to have stayed.
