Our guest speaker is u3a member. Dr Chris Hodkinson. He is an experienced speaker, cultural historian, formerly of Lancaster University.
Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition of 1857 remains the largest arts event ever held in Britain. Northern industrialists. Frequently dismissed by the art establishment as philistines, created a landmark cultural event. It was financed by private enterprise.
Queen Victoria opened the event ... a young Charles Halle, formed an orchestra to play concerts at the exhibition.
