A Walk around Ramsbottom
Sunday 7th May 2017
The Walk
This is a walk of two halves. The first half is around Ramsbottom itself and it is surprisingly pleasant leading us to a park for our coffee stop. For the second half a short stretch through the town leads us to more open countryside leading us up a wooded hillside to a ridge walk along the escarpment to Peel Tower and then down to the start, a distance of about 7.2 miles.
The Start
Meet at the car park as directed below. This is a popular walking area and the car park is small so we need as few cars as possible. Some of us may have to park on the road which is not very busy
Meet at Parbold shops at 09.00 am with a view to start the walk at 10.15 am
Directions
From Parbold make your way to the Macron Stadium (Ex Reebok) close by J6 on the M61 via Standish,Haigh & Aspull. Pass the stadium & Tesco on your left on up to the Beehive roundabout. Turn right onto the A673 Bolton. In 1.5 miles at traffic lights turn left onto A58 Bolton ring road. Follow A58 for about 4 miles to A676 (immediately after passing under a railway bridge) Turn left onto the A676 signed Ramsbottom. Stay on this road for 0.7miles to a V junction at second set of traffic lights not counting the pedestrian lights. Go to the left signed (A56 Burnley). After 4 miles the road dips to a set of traffic lights in front of the Hare & Hounds pub.(post code Nav BL0 9RY) Just through the lights on your left Lumbs Carr Road leads uphill to the Car Park on your right in 0.5miles.
We have to cross two busy roads so extra care will be required in these areas. Most of the paths & tracks are in good condition but there are one or two places where it is muddy & on an incline so care must be taken at these locations. Make sure you have warm & waterproof clothing with you. Suitable footwear is essential & a walking stick could be useful in places.
