Transport Links

Travel Planning system on Red Planet Travel.

This is a better system than Transport Direct as it includes flights, ferries and walking directions, on top of the public transport information that the Transport Direct site used to offer. This means it works from anywhere in the world.

Rail update for December 2019 Most passengers will welcome the new timetable from December 16th, with an hourly daytime service at 36 minutes past the hour to Oxford Road, Stockport and Alderley Edge and 54 minutes past to Victoria and Stalybridge with a few extras at peak times. Connections to and from London and Birmingham are overall much better. For the SWthe rushed connections travelling through Wolverhampton can now cost more as well, presumably to pay for the compensation when you miss them! Many may prefer to change at Stockport - hourly on to Bristol with several extended to Exeter and beyond. Connections Northbound are not as good and day trippers who can get to Rufford may prefer to catch the train there. A welcome improvement is onward buses to Langdale or Coniston after the morning arrivals into Windermere AND convenient return timings.

By Bus.

The bus stations in the town centres of Ormskirk and Skelmersdale provide a base for local bus services which link the two towns and many of the rural villages including Parbold. Bus links are also provided to Liverpool, Wigan, Southport, Preston and other towns. For up-to-the minute travel information call the travel line on 0870 6082 608 or visit the Lancashire County Council website.

By Car

There are excellent road links with the rest of the North West region and ample car parking is available throughout the borough. The M58 runs through the heart of Skelmersdale, linking directly with the M6 at Junction 26 in Wigan and the Liverpool M57 motorway. Ormskirk is at the junction of two major trunk roads - the A59 Liverpool to Preston road and the A570 Southport to St. Helens which links with the A580 Liverpool to Manchester road.

By Train

Ormskirk, Burscough and Rufford are on the Preston to Liverpool Central Line. Bescar Lane, New Lane, Burscough Bridge, Hoscar, Parbold and Appley Bridge are on the Southport/Wigan line while Up Holland station is on the Liverpool/Wigan line.

By Bike

Being a smallish village, there is not much cycling space within Parbold itself, and the roads are pretty narrow. However we do get many cycle parties flying through on evenings and weekends, especially in the spring and summer. Obviously the success of Bradley Wiggins, who is often seen cycling around the area has grown the passion for cycling and we are seeing more enthusiasts around the village. You can find local cycle routes of nearby areas here. Cycling in West Lancashire
